The Land of Teak and Bamboo
Retreat to the birthplace of British teak plantations, and explore the remnants of medieval kingdoms and Nair illams
5days | Winter & Spring | Nilambur | Ancient Illams, Temple rituals, Nair culture, Teak forests, Rain forests
Day1: Arrival
Arrive at Nilambur via the scenic little rail line from Shoranur (50km), or drive in from Kozhikode airport (40km), or drive down from Ooty via Gudalur (120km). Check into a centuries-old heritage mansion – likely one of the only pathinaarukettu (4-courtyard mansion) remaining in Kerala.
Day2: A Day of Teak and History
Drive out after an early breakfast to the the largest teak auction area in the world. Hike through deciduous forests of very old teak and other hardwood, along paths used by the cave dwelling tribal people even today for their monthly forays into civilization. Dive into swift-flowing river coming down from the mountains to cool down, and tuck into a picnic lunch. Stop by the memorial to a British forester on the way back and drive to the Teak Museum in the evening to learn about the history of teak.
Day3: A Day with Nature
Drive over to the nearby mountain areas, either to visit a biodiversity preserve or to follow a river cascading down mountain valleys. Breathe in the fresh air as your mild hike and the verdant nature work your worries out of your system.
Day4: A Day of Culure
Spend the morning acquainting yourself with the heritage home & the history and lore surrounding it. After lunch head out to meet a living master of the ancient temple ritual of Kalamvarachupatt. He will hold you in thrall with the evolution and history of this dying art form now practiced only in a few areas in this part of Kerala. On a lucky day you can even chance upon a live ritual. Visit the local potters and weavers on the way back.
